Policy Status : Suggested
That the Govt immediately take steps so that GST and Duty to be applied to all imported internet transactions.

GST and Duty to be applied to all internet transactions. The De Minimis rule for imports should be done away with. This rule basically states that collection of small amounts is not worth the costs of collect when the amount is below $50. However, I believe that a system has to be implemented where at least GST is claimed on everything – and it may be that a blanket tax of (say) 5% is applied to all internet purchases. The reasons are twofold, 1. There are businesses in NZ which are operating under non-competitive conditions where it is impossible to compete with overseas pricing, labour costs, and relatively small costs of running a large international business, with small delivery costs, in international delivery to NZ. And 2. The Government of NZ is entitled to receive duties and VAT, while at the same time, bringing the pricing up to meet the conditions under which local businesses are operating
